Baltimore Energy Challenge PD to all Teaching Staff
On February 26, 2014. the Baltimore Energy Challenge presented 30 minute presentation during a Professional Development Day to the entire teaching staff. Two members of the BEC team talked about how students were conserving energy at the school and what the teaching staff could do to help their mission. They presented the top 10 energy saving steps teachers could take at the school and in their homes to conserve energy. This included turning off lights and using power strips for computers. Teachers were asked to sign an energy saving pledge and were given energy saving starter kit that included toilet tank banks, CFL light bulbs and other simple to install energy saving measures. Teachers were encouraged to include energy saving ideas in their daily lessons they shared with students. Teachers are committed to helping Baltimore meet it's energy reduction goal of 15% by 2015.

Learning in the Garden PD with Jason Reed at Real Food Farm, March 29th,2014
Ms. Williams attended this 4 hour PD and left with lesson plans, plant lists and information about how to use the garden as a classroom. Ms. Williams learned how to create pathways with cardboard and mulch and the teachers and students have begun plans to install them in the school yard.
What lessons can we learn in the garden?
Come see how Jason Reed uses gardening activities and garden design to engage students in Common Core, Environmental Literacy and STEM learning.
Teachers and green teams from local schools can join in hands on gardening activities, discussion on sustainable garden design and low maintenance outdoor education experience.
Bring your school garden plans to get advice on how to use activities, garden designs and resources to create thriving crops and successful learning experiences at your school.
At the end of this 4 hour workshop, you will have the resources and knowledge you need to grow learning in the garden in a meaningful way.

Professional Development by Ms. Weber from the Department of Recreation and Parks
Six teaching staff attended this PD with students. This was an hour long PD about how roots grow in the soil. The teachers learned how to teach students how roots grow under ground and collect nutrients and water for herbs. They were taught how to make a terrarium and how to use that as a teaching tool with students to explain how plants get their nutrients and roots grow in the dark under the soil. Teachers learned this lesson with a group of students but were then prepared to take this lesson back to their own classrooms so the entire student population was taught this lesson by different teaching staff. The teachers that attended were Ms. Jefferson, Ms. Johnson, Ms. Williams, Mr. Williamson, Nurse Nancy, Ms. Rodwell and Ms. King. Even Grandparents attended this PD. The PD was June 6th 2013.

Professional Development with Mr. Charles Gummer from the Maryland Agriculture Educational Foundation. This PD happened on 4/2/13. Mr. Gummer taught Ms. Jefferson,Ms. Johnson, Ms. Williams, Mr. Williamson, Nurse Nancy,Ms. Rodwell and Ms. King. The PD lasted and hour and covered growing seeds in milk cartons to start their growth. Teachers learned along side the students how to create these gardens that could be taken home. Teachers learned that they could take an object that usually gets thrown away and repurpose it as a garden for students. They took this knowledge back to their classrooms and were able to share it with other students. Teachers have taken this learned skill outdoors and can now directly sow seeds into the garden with students.
