Healthy School Environment:
Students grow and eat healthy food from the school garden. Students harvest and bring the food into the classroom to eat. All students in the school have sampled and eaten food grown in the garden event including edible pansies! Students grow indoor plants to enhance air quality. Students grow bulbs in the classroom and have paper-white flowers inside every November. The garden started in 2012 with just Tomatoes and Green Peppers being harvested. In 2013 the garden had a stellar year. Students planted and harvested kale, cantaloupe, tomatoes, cumbers, green peppers, garlic, lettuces, spinach, lettuce fingerling potatoes, snap peas, and onions.
Students learn to harvest and wash the vegetables. Students are encouraged to eat fruits and vegetables for their health.
Students also get to eat fresh fruits, vegetables and salads through the National School Lunch Program. They get fruits and vegetables twice a day. ( Students use the peels and left overs for their school compost pile which increases the nutrients in their garden!
